How the School was Founded
Putnam Academy of Arts and Sciences (PAAS) opened its doors for the very first time in 2012. We welcomed our premier classes of 6th and 7th graders on August 22, 2012.
PAAS was founded by five Putnam County teachers: Carla Aycock, Joyce Baron, Diana Latta, Rhona Scoville, and Elisabeth Virnstein. We believed that we could create a middle school that prepared students not only for middle school but also for high school and the wider world ahead. The founders between them have over 135 years of experience teaching middle and high school.
Among our founders are four teachers who have earned Master’s Degrees, three National Board Certified teachers, and three past Putnam County Teachers of the Year.
Putnam Academy of Arts and Sciences, in partnership with parents and community, provides challenging, well-rounded educational opportunities in a safe and supportive environment.
Our school fosters creative minds, critical thinkers and ethical character. We are dedicated to individual development of the attitudes, skills, knowledge and responsibility essential to successful achievement in
school and society.
